Our Year in Review: 2018
2018 was a big year!
We worked with so many women to start their businesses. We hit six figures. We spoke at incredible events. And we made a ton of mistakes along the way!
Here’s a breakdown of what worked (and what didn’t) this year…
We expanded our business
We started as a law firm. Our mission was to help more women start successful companies. And we did.
We drafted contracts to protect businesses, negotiated licensing deals with NBC, cheered as clients made $40k brand deals, and filed successful trademarks and copyrights.
We also hosted weekly complimentary consultations to anyone who wanted to learn more about setting up their business legally. And we talked with a lot of you! In fact, we talked with over 100 people this year. That’s over 50 hours of advice and guidance that we shared with the women-owned business community for free.
Then we started to think big. We wanted to do more. We wanted to build something that we desperately needed when we started our first company. Something that would have saved us so much time, money, and endless googling. A homebase for women entrepreneurs.
So that’s what we did. We expanded. And now we can support you in all areas of your business.
We launched our downloads + courses
We launched The Better Business Plan this year and wow. We were blown away by the positive feedback! So many of you emailed us to say that it made a big difference in your business, your decisions, and your profits. It made us realize that we can help women entrepreneurs in so many ways.
We also launched our first course, The More Sales Method, last month. To start the course, we created a 5 day sales challenge where more than 1,000 people signed up to improve their sales strategy in a week. At the end of the challenge, we opened our course. The results were insane! We couldn’t even keep up with the instagram dms during our Black Friday sale, so we decided to make the Black Friday price permanent. A killer sales strategy is such a key piece of a profitable business and we didn’t want anyone to miss out because they couldn’t afford it. Afterall, our entire mission is about helping women-owned businesses succeed!
We spoke at inspiring events for women
Speaking at conferences and events is one of my favorite things. I love meeting new friends and sharing everything I’ve learned with other entrepreneurs.
This year, I spoke at Magic, one of the largest tradeshows for apparel, in Las Vegas. I spoke to 200 entrepreneurs about how to protect their brands with trademarks, walked the show, met with clients who were exhibiting, and ran my business from the Bellagio for a week.
A few weeks later, I spoke at a Hollywood event for women in media. I talked about how to start your business legally, did q+a with the audience, and sat on a panel with some of my favorite badass women. This night was so empowering and magical!
I also chatted on several podcasts. I spoke with Naomi of The Lifestyle Edit about how we doubled our revenue this year. Naomi is my work wife and a super successful business owner. She’s a big reason why my business was so successful this year.
I also spoke with Coni of The LadyBalls Podcast. Coni is doing powerful things for women in Los Angeles. We had a great chat about how being a woman in business is actually your greatest advantage and how you can use it to your benefit.
We traveled to incredible places
For me, the best part of being an entrepreneur is the travel. I have freedom in my schedule to roam around the world and a lot of time I actually get paid for it! #dreamjob.
This year, I celebrated a month of Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Louisiana. I spent my best mornings surrounded by beignets and live oak trees in the park.
I took a weeklong honeymoon to Merida, Mexico. My new husband and I ate our way through the street vendors at Lucas de Galvez market and spent afternoons in La Negrita Cantina, our favorite bar.
I spent three months in Joshua Tree, California. This summer, we skipped town and headed to the desert for a little detox. We hiked the national park, watched sunsets over the Colorado desert, and sipped iced tea from the Pappy and Harriets patio.
What didn’t work
Whew. As great as this year was, there was so much that we did wrong. I ignored key areas of my business. I spent money on things that didn’t work. I focused on the wrong things.
Honestly, I learned way too much this year to do a quick blog post about it. Our new podcast is coming out January 1st and we’re going in-depth into everything we did wrong this year and how we’re going to fix it in 2019.
I’m so interested to see how many people are making the same mistakes as we did this year!
What we’re focusing on next year
We’ve got big plans for 2019!
We’re launching a podcast on January 1st where we take you in-depth and personal into our business to show you exactly how we built it. Step by Step.
We’re also launching a YouTube channel to show you the fun side of being an entrepreneur. The travel. The cute office supplies. The outfits. I’m so excited to show you behind the scenes of what we do everyday!
We’re joining The Wing as a founding member of the West Hollywood location. The Wing is a gorgeous co-working space for women, complete with lactation spots, beauty rooms, and inspiring events. Our new office opens in February!
We’re also speaking at some insane conferences!
In March, we’re spending an entire week in Palm Springs at the Alt Summit conference, where we’re speaking about how to protect your business with trademarks and copyrights. The keynote speaker this year is Joanna Gaines so we’ll be the ones holding the “Shiplap Forever” sign!
And we’ll be at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas for a week to host a Female Founder Meetup and Business Workshop! Austin is one of my favorite cities in the world and I’m so excited to spend a whole week listening to live music, eating from food trucks, and jumping into swimming holes.
One last thing!
We get emails and messages all the time thanking us for what we do. And the feeling is mutual. Thank you for your love and support this year!
I can’t tell you how excited it makes me when I see women doing big things in business. And I’m so glad that we get to be a part of that success.
We’re so excited to continue helping you start and grow your business in 2019!
